How to choose a blender
Blenders range from 300 W single-serve models to 1,500 W+ high-performance machines. The right choice depends on two questions: what is the toughest thing you blend regularly, and how much do you blend at once. Soft fruit smoothies need little power; frozen fruit, ice, leafy greens, nut butters and hot soups need progressively more. Capacity matters because a jar works best filled to about three-quarters.
Jar size ≈ servings × 12 oz ÷ 0.75
Power guide
| Task | Typical power | Type |
| Fresh fruit smoothies, protein shakes | 300 – 700 W | Personal / single-serve |
| Frozen fruit, ice | 900 – 1,200 W | Full-size |
| Leafy greens, fibrous vegetables | 1,000 – 1,400 W | Full-size / high-performance |
| Nut butter, hummus, nut milk | 1,400 W + | High-performance with tamper |
| Hot soup heated by friction | 1,400 W + | High-performance with soup program |
| Pureeing soup in the pot | 200 – 500 W | Immersion blender |
Wattage isn't everything: blade design, jar shape and motor quality matter. A well-designed 1,000 W blender can outperform a poorly designed 1,500 W one. Warranty length is a good indicator of how much the maker trusts the motor.
Jar sizes
- 16 – 24 oz: single servings, blend-and-go cups.
- 32 – 48 oz: 1 – 3 servings, smaller kitchens.
- 64 oz: the standard family size.
- 72 – 90 oz: large families, batch frozen drinks.
Low, wide jars blend small quantities better and fit under cabinets; tall narrow jars create a strong vortex for larger batches.
Features worth having
- Variable speed plus pulse for control.
- A tamper for thick blends.
- Preset programs (smoothie, ice crush, soup) for hands-free blending.
- BPA-free Tritan or glass jars; glass is heavier but scratch-resistant.
- Self-cleaning: blend warm water with a drop of dish soap for 30 – 60 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
How many watts do I need for frozen smoothies?
About 900 – 1,200 W in a full-size blender. Personal blenders around 600 – 1,000 W can handle smaller frozen portions.
What size blender for a family of four?
A 64-ounce full-size blender is the most common choice for families.
Can a blender make nut butter?
Yes, a high-performance blender of about 1,400 W or more with a tamper. Smaller blenders tend to overheat.
Is a personal blender enough?
For single-serve smoothies and shakes, yes. For ice, soups, nut butters or family portions, choose a full-size model.
Is a more powerful blender always better?
Not always. Blade and jar design, motor quality and warranty matter as much as wattage.
About BlendRight
BlendRight is an independent, free calculator for choosing a blender by capacity and power. Recommendations are general guidance based on typical blender specifications. We are not affiliated with any appliance brand.
Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.
The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
